Omniverse

Omniverse

Omniverse is a real-time 3D graphics platform created by Nvidia for building interconnected and large-scale, physically accurate 3D worlds with a common standard - OpenUSD. Omniverse is based on OpenUSD, allowing you to create interconnected extensions and apps.

System Requirements

To use Omniverse with Magic Leap 2, your system must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Windows 10/11
  • Intel i7 Gen 7 or AMD Ryzen
  • 32GB RAM
  • Nvidia RTX GPU with at least 12GB VRAM

Prerequisites

Before installing Omniverse, make sure you have the following ready:

Install Omniverse

This section goes over installing Omniverse. It uses the Standard install, you can choose Enterprise or Cloud if needed, but the steps may vary from these. To install Omniverse, do the following:

  1. Navigate to the Nvidia Downloads page and under Standard, click the Download Free button.

  2. You are prompted to fill out information about yourself. Fill in the required fields and continue to the prompt that says 'See You in Omniverse.' Click Windows to download the Omniverse installer.

  3. Open the installer. You get a prompt that says 'Installing, please wait.' When installation completes, you are prompted to log in to Omniverse. If you don't have an account, choose Create account and follow the instructions. Otherwise, log in.

  4. You are asked if you want to open the Nvidia Omniverse Launcher. Click Open NVIDIA Omniverse Launcher. The first time through, you must accept the licensing agreement and click Continue.

  5. A Settings panel opens and shows you all the paths set for your library, data, content, and cache. It's recommended to use the default settings. Click Continue.

  6. You are asked if you want to install Cache. Click Install Cache.

  7. On first log in, you are asked to set your cookies. Choose Manage My Cookies or Accept All Cookies.

You have now installed Omniverse, and you are ready to set up Omniverse USD Composer.

Install Omniverse USD Composer

Make sure you have installed and logged in to Omniverse. This section walks you through setting up Omniverse USD Composer.

  1. In the search bar at the top of the Omniverse panel, type USD Composer and click the magnifying glass to search.

  2. When USD Composer appears as an app you can download, click on it. You are taken to a screen describing the product, and it lets you choose the release you want to install. For use with Magic Leap 2, choose the Beta release for 2023.2.0 or higher. (You must have 2023.2.0 or higher for use with Magic Leap 2).

  3. Click Install. The process may take some time, you can watch the process in the green box above the install panel.

  4. When installation completes, click the Launch button to start USD Composer.

You are ready to configure USD Composer for use with your Magic Leap 2 headset.

Configure USD Composer for Use with Magic Leap 2 Headset

This section shows you how to set up USD Composer for use with your Magic Leap 2 headset. Do the following:

  1. In USD Composer at the top of the screen, click Window. Choose Extensions. A new panel with available extensions opens.

  2. On the Extensions panel, in the search bar at the top, type AR Experience. You should get back AR EXPERIENCE [ALPHA] as one of the choices. Click AR EXPERIENCE [ALPHA].

  3. At the top of the screen, toggle the button labeled DISABLED to ENABLED.

  4. Check the box next to AUTOLOAD.

Everything is ready to start using USD Composer with Magic Leap 2! By this point, you should have installed Omniverse, USD Composer, and configured USD Composer for use.

Use USD Composer with the Magic Leap 2 Headset

This section walks you through setting up a scene from Omniverse to view in your Magic Leap 2 headset. Do the following:

  1. Go to USD Composer and load the file you want to view on the Magic Leap 2 headset.

  2. Look for the AR panel in the lower right corner and open it. Make sure your remote viewer is connected to the host machine with USD composer running on it. Click the Start AR button.

  3. On your Magic Leap 2 headset (make sure the headset is on the same network as the computer with USD Composer), start Remote Viewer.

You can see your scene in the headset.
